Artist Statement

Movement is the language I speak most fluently. The creative expression of movement has carried me in the most challenging points of my life and into the vitality of the most joyful. While movement frees me, I am acutely aware of my presence in the world; My experiences often influence my movement as a first-generation American woman of color. I’ve established myself as an award-winning creative in choreography, filmmaking, and music composition in the last decade. With my unique mastery of these skills, my work breaks presentational models and classic forms. In addition to this passion for creating extraordinary work, I founded Concept o4, a company dedicated to making access points for underserved communities to view dance work through affordable options supported by technology.

I never ceased creating original work throughout my 15-year career in professional dance companies. As a choreographer, my innovation on movement is shaped by my training in ballet, modern, street dance, and martial arts vocabularies, with a fierce willingness to innovate and push the edges of creation. I share this tenacity for innovation with my collaborators and dancers while harboring a safe and inclusive space in the studio. I am deeply fascinated by our shared human experience, and my work explores our physical connection to each other as well as the communities we inhabit in life. I emphasize raw emotion, intense physicality, and a link to rhythmic and intricate music. I have created work for stage, film, and immersive site-specific applications and feel at ease innovating in all these mediums. As a result, I am equipped to share my work in multiple formats and support my community as dance moves to other forms of presentation.

Art making is more than just the work that ends up on stage and film; it is an impactful experience for all involved. It is also life-changing and profound for those who get to witness it. Dance is a vital part of our healing and expression as a community. The healing I have experienced is something I desire to share generously. I am passionate and care deeply about the art forms I inhabit as an artist and hope to continue to encourage the proliferation of equitable spaces and conversations wherever I go.
